The Coin Shark: What Is Wrong with the Screen of Samsung Fold?

  • Thursday, 18 April 2019 12:30
Not so long ago, we reported about the novelty of the South Korean electronics giant Samsung, its revolutionary smartphone with a foldable screen. The concept was soon adopted by its Chinese competitors, Xiaomi and Huawei, there were even rumors about Apple also working on a similar device. At first, it seemed like foldable screen phones will soon blow up the market, and the main engine of this process would be Samsung. However, things did not go quite as planned. As we all know, before entering mass market, most devices and gadgets are sent to a bunch of testers, usually to large media outlets, in order to test them out and write reviews. With launches of such major companies as Samsung, the incidents are not frequent. As per usual, their devices are on point and amaze the testers with their design and technological features. Unfortunately, that was not the case with the infamous Samsung Galaxy Fold. The editors and journalists from the most popular news agencies started reporting failures with the devices and its screen only after a day or two of using them. Dieter Bohn, from the Verge, mentioned a weird bulge that appeared on the screen of his Samsung Galaxy Fold. SUPER YIKES: something happened to my Galaxy Fold screen and caused a bulge. I don’t know how it happened, and I’m waiting to hear back from Samsung. It’s broken. https://t.co/p1014uB01D pic.twitter.com/3FZJkWtSKr — Dieter Bohn (@backlon) 17 апреля 2019 г. Steve Kovach from CNBC just posted a sad video of his device after one day of using, which clearly shows the broken screen. The screen on my Galaxy Fold review unit is completely broken and unusable just two days in. Hard to know if this is widespread or not. pic.twitter.com/G0OHj3DQHw — Mark Gurman (@markgurman) 17 апреля 2019 г. “When I tap the screen as well with the top of my finger and the fingernail hits it (very common), it also leaves a seemingly permanent indent,” he mentioned in a following tweet. Samsung received a wave of criticism from its reviewers and is now trying to fix the issue. The reason why the screen can be broken so easily is still unclear. Some people thought that these problems were caused by the removal of a protective layer from it, however, even those testers, who still had it on, experienced problems too. This is the second major fail of Samsung since the times of Samsung Galaxy S7 and its explosive battery. Their well-advertised and promoted product, Samsung Galaxy Fold still needs a lot of improvements before it can be put out for public sale.
