Blockchain technology is being looked at in terms of solving fragmented supply chain management and logistics around the world. With the complexities of supply chain, blockchain could definitely be a game changer for the logistics industry. Here are some highlights of supply chain on the blockchain news the past week!New Blockchain Startup Aims At Harmonizing Supply Chain Compliance & Sustainability WorkflowsDriven by how to make the world a better, safer, and more sustainable place with blockchain technology — three top managers joined forces to launch the startup CircularTree.Click for source of photoCircularTree is currently working on two projects: HazChain and SustainBlock. HazChain aims at reducing the complexity of managing knowledge about chemical hazards and potential risks. SustainBlock utilizes blockchain technology for Conflict Minerals traceability.Applied DNA and Everledger to Build Blockchain PlatformApplied DNA and Everledger will use their individual platforms to develop an integrated “physical and digital security for supply chain traceability and certification” for name brands and products with the aim of tracking the movement and transportation of goods across more complicated ecosystems.Everledger’s founder and CEO, Leanne Kemp, said, “In terms of the high-end products industry, authenticity, provenance as well as value, cannot be separated. By incorporating a forensic layer to uniquely identifying an asset, we can provide the added confidence in the data captured and tracked on our blockchain-enabled platform.”Blockchain Technology and IoT to Manage Supply Chains and Animal Welfare Conditions in AustraliaAustralia featured high in blockchain and supply chain news this week. Firstly, startup — Ultimo Digital Technologies (UDT) located in Sydney — is looking to combine blockchain technology and internet of things (IoT) technology to track the food supply chain from paddock to plate. The UDT team are working on developing a trackable chip to ensure that the supply chain can always be traced.John Baird, entrepreneur and former CSIRO experimental scientist and chairman of the cybersecurity advisory council, is currently working with students from the Sydney University of Technology who are researching, designing, and applying blockchain technology for real-life commercial applications.Australian Government Awards Grant to Blockchain Project for Sustainable SugarMore news from Australia — the Australian government has granted A$2.25 million ($1.7 million) to the Sustainable Sugar Project, Foodnavigator-Asia reports July 30.The Sustainable Sugar Project, led by the Queensland Cane Growers Organization, will use blockchain technology to track the provenance of sugar supplies to Australia. The initiative known as the Smart Cane Best Management Practice (BMP) is part of a sugar industry push for better sustainability and traceability.Australia’s Commonwealth Bank Completes Global Trade Pilot Test Using the Ethereum BlockchainAccording to the Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA), the CBA and five Australian and international supply chain companies have successfully shipped seventeen tonnes of almonds from Sunraysia in Victoria, Australia to Hamburg, Germany, using a blockchain-based platform built on Ethereum. The blockchain-based platform uses a combination of technologies including distributed ledger technology, smart contracts, and the internet of things (IoT) to facilitate global trade. The experiment was highly successful and managed to track the almond shipment from the packer to the final delivery.Farm to Cradle: Nestlé Experiments with Tracking Gerber Baby Food on the BlockchainNestlé SA is putting some of its Gerber baby food products on a food-tracking blockchain to test whether the technology can trace the fruits and vegetables that go into its purées and squeezable pouches. Nestlé’s effort is part of a wider food-industry exercise aimed at improving food recalls by using the technology behind bitcoin to trace a worldwide ingredient supply chain.Nestlé also sees the move as a way to generate customer trust everyday and during recalls. Chris Tyas, Nestle Global head of Supply Chain said, “People want to know, quite rightly, where ingredients they give to their baby have come from. We wanted a product in which trust meant something.”BLOK Technologies and Varipay to Build Cannabis Payment SolutionBLOK Technologies and Varipay are partnering together to generate a blockchain based payment solution for the pending legalized cannabis industry. The companies will work together to develop a “payment gateway” in connection with Greenstream Network.Varipay will provide to Greenstream the means for payment processing. From there, Greenstream will work to provide Varipay’s technology solution with blockchain. BLOK Technologies, Greenstream, and Varipay will all work together in developing and designing financial services, blockchain and “other business opportunities” specifically for the cannabis industry.eMusic Building A Blockchain Platform To Fix A Broken Music Industry“For two decades, eMusic has been a champion of independent artists and their fans. However, today’s supply chain for music is broken. While streaming has made it possible for anyone to listen to virtually any song ever recorded at any time, its underlying economics are financially crippling to the most vital piece of the music ecosystem — artists. And on the other side of the supply chain, service providers are losing billions and struggling to stay alive. Most fans don’t realize that this is an unsustainable future with fewer artists and fewer providers,” said Tamir Koch, CEO of eMusic. As the first major music service to fully embrace blockchain, eMusic will develop a sustainable music ecosystem for artists, service providers, and the fans that support them. eMusic’s mission is to correct an imbalanced music industry by building a fair, simple, and transparent music distribution platform for artists and service providers.Want to know more about Sweetbridge?Sweetbridge is an open-source project unlocking the value trapped in assets, payment delays, and corporate talent.
