Walmart, Nestle, Dole, 3M, and Centricity are among the large brands that have joined the effort. After 18 months of testing, IBM Food Trust, a blockchain-based food and supply chain solution, is “generally available,” the company said on Monday.As of 8 October 2018, any member of the food ecosystem could sign up to join the network. Suppliers can share data at no cost, but the solution’s software as a service (SaaS) modules must be purchased via subscription, according to the press release.Europe’s largest retailer adopts blockchain to track fresh produceRetail giant Carrefour SA has adopted blockchain ledger technology to track and trace chicken, eggs, and tomatoes as they travel from farms to stores. Carrefour SA will deploy this technology across all of its fresh product lines in coming years.The French retailer said it will rely on blockchain technology developed by IBM, which is working with a number of retailers, logistics firms, and growers to roll out systems to secure their global supply chains.Blockchain debuts in the aircraft operations’ supply chainBlockchain is finally going mainstream in the aviation supply chain. Gazpromneft-Aero have introduced joint smart-contracts (aviation fuel smart contracts — AFSC), that have been developed and implemented using blockchain as the underlying technology. AFSC is the latest milestone in the drive to improving speed and efficiency in reciprocal settlements in aviation refueling, as well as automating planning and accounting in fuel supplies.This is the first usage of distributed ledger (blockchain) technologies on the Russian market. With its help, aviation companies now have the opportunity to make instant payments for fuel directly on refueling aircraft, without pre-payment, bank guarantees or any financial risks to the parties involved — an approach that engenders significant improvements in the speed and efficiency of financial transactions.Beefing up traceability: Ambrosus blockchain tracks Korea’s Nongshim beef sold at Mega MartAmbrosus, the globally decentralized blockchain and IoT platform, has joined forces with NDS, a subsidiary of Korean food producer Nongshim, to track and trace premium quality beef sold by food retailer Mega Mart. Ambrosus is pioneering what it describes as a “revolutionary beef traceability model” in Mega Mark using the AMB-NET blockchain.All kinds of information will be captured through a QR code including the specific cow, its origin, the veterinarian’s health check of the meat, and the transportation conditions of the product. Consumers can easily access the data through smartphone scanning.Thailand studies blockchain for applications in intellectual property and trade financeTwo feasibility studies on blockchain technology have been launched by Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce.
