The Coin Shark: Electronic Arts Leaked the Real Names of Its Players

  • Wednesday, 20 February 2019 11:30
An American video games studio Electronic Arts has been quite a disappointment for the players all over the world in the recent couple of years. It released games that actually flopped, like Battlefield 5. that came out unfinished. We should also keep in mind the controversy with the Star Wars games. The company was granted exclusive rights to produce games on the basis of the franchise, however, nothing good came out of it, more so Disney is even considering taking back the exclusive right and giving it to a different studio. Now EA get involved into another scandal, related to its Origin platform. The leakage issue Origin is an online store that belongs to Electronic Arts. Within the platform, the users are able to purchase different games on the Internet and start them in Origin. Yesterday, a Reddit user under the nickname Legendairr posted about issues in Origin, mainly regarding the violation of user privacy. “Something is going on with origin. Several users and friends of mine reported that the privacy settings to show your real name are activated automatically even though all of us had it disabled initially,” his post stated. It seems like the platform showed the actual names of some users, not their pseudonyms, without their knowledge or consent. It even happened to those who specifically deactivate the feature “show real name” in the settings. How to deal with the issue? If you want to double check that your name is not exposed to everyone out there, go to “My Account” on Origin, and then go to “Privacy Settings”. The representatives of Electronic Arts have not yet given any comments on the possible security breach of their online store.
