One Minute Economics: Study Types: Descriptive (Surveys) & Analytic (Randomized Controlled Trials, Observational Studies)

  • Sunday, 17 February 2019 20:24
You probably recognize them as "pop science" words: this survey said this, this Randomized Controlled Trial said that, these case reports indicate this, these observational studies indicate that... the list could go on and on. But how many types of studies are there? Well... a lot :) In my opinion, the easiest way to establish a foundation is to consider two broad categories: descriptive studies on the one hand and analytic studies on the other. When it comes to descriptive studies, we have everything from case studies and reports to surveys. As far as analytic studies are concerned, we have experimental studies such as Randomized Controlled Trials on the one hand and observational analytic studies on the other, for example cohort studies. Sounds complicated? It really isn't as long as you properly understand what each study type is all about.
