TheTedNelson: Galeridge, My family's place for 98 years

  • Monday, 02 September 2019 01:00
This is an overview of Galeridge, the place I love most, in the northwestern highlands of New Jersey (sometimes called "Skylands")-- far from practically everything. My great-grandfather, Edmund Gale Jewett, bought the first parcel in 1921. The Jewett and Holm families summered here ever since. My mother spent her summers here in the 1920s, and I spent my summers here in the 1940s. Galeridge has little real-estate value, since most farming is now impractical in the rocky fields of New Jersey, but it is being farmed by specialist experts to keep up the legal requirements. Soon they will be putting up deer fences around the fields, making the views less lovely. So here it is in May 2019, with the vistas clear.
